In our ongoing effort to be as absurd as possible here at BNN, we’ve decided to launch a contest: *When will Lucy’s umbilical-cord stump drop off?* (Seriously.) Enter your guess here, and if you come closest to the actual day and time, you will win _fabulous prizes!_ Continue reading “Umbilical-cord-dropoff contest! Fabulous prizes!”
Baby Houdini
We’ve already learned that there are no sure-fire tricks in baby care — but if there’s one that’s come close so far, it’s swaddling. Wrapping up Lucy snugly to keep her arms and legs comfortably contained simply works wonders. It almost always calms her and puts that look back on her face that says, “Ah, yes, Papa; I can see that once again you are right: there _is_ nothing to worry about.” Continue reading “Baby Houdini”
Milk-face
I think my milk came in today. Lucy has been nursing pretty well ever since our talk with the lactation consultant at Evanston Hospital just about 24 hours after her birth. Continue reading “Milk-face”
What would Lennon say?
Strange baby-commerce item of the day: White Cloud newborn diapers with lyrics from John Lennon’s “Imagine” printed on them: “Imagine all the people / living life in peace.” I guess White Cloud and the marketing department at Wal-Mart (where these are “available exclusively”) must have nixed using the lines, “Imagine no possessions / I wonder if you can.”
Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes
In addition to the “linguistic, spiritual, and family reasons”:http://lucyboyd.com/about/ behind Lucy’s naming, we were aware of a number of cultural references tucked away in her name — most of which we think are really cool. Here are the ones we know about already: Continue reading “Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes”
Unreal
Lucy, Jon, and I are all glad to be settled into our cozy home again. Jon just took Lucy for a tour of the house. It was fun to be able to show her all the places she has been for the past nine months, even though she couldn’t see them until now. Continue reading “Unreal”
Lucy gets home
Hooray! Lucy has arrived at her home here on Saint Louis Avenue, and so far she seems to like it. At least, she seems to like it if we can judge from the fact that she has [1] slept and [2] nursed the whole two hours she’s been here. Continue reading “Lucy gets home”
33:00 LE
Oh my, what a delight this little girl is! About 33 hours into the Lucy Era, Ann and I can report “all systems go.” Here are just a very few of the highlights (including a photo): Continue reading “33:00 LE”
Lucy is here!
We’re so delighted that our daughter has been born! Her name is Lucy — “Lucia Martha Boyd”:http://lucyboyd.com/about/, in full — and both she and Ann are doing great.
No time right now for the full blow-by-blow, but Lucy was born this morning (April 25) at 8:49 am, after just about 12 hours of labor by Ann. Continue reading “Lucy is here!”
Bring it on: The labor post
So much for “getting some rest”:/news/2006/early-labor/, as we had hoped: Ann’s contractions have kept steady and increased in intensity all evening — way too much for her to ignore. Continue reading “Bring it on: The labor post”
