Small axe
For the past couple days, I’ve had Bob Marley’s song “Small Axe” running through my head. The beat has a “one-two-three” riff that has been lodged deep in my brain, to a degree that’s a bit unusual. more »
New and Improved! Now with Rosie!
For the past couple days, I’ve had Bob Marley’s song “Small Axe” running through my head. The beat has a “one-two-three” riff that has been lodged deep in my brain, to a degree that’s a bit unusual. more »
I haven’t written much about the labor experience yet, but it’s not because I haven’t been thinking about it. Mainly I haven’t written about labor for these reasons:
In our ongoing effort to be as absurd as possible here at BNN, we’ve decided to launch a contest: When will Lucy’s umbilical-cord stump drop off? (Seriously.) Enter your guess here, and if you come closest to the actual day and time, you will win fabulous prizes! more »
We’ve already learned that there are no sure-fire tricks in baby care — but if there’s one that’s come close so far, it’s swaddling. Wrapping up Lucy snugly to keep her arms and legs comfortably contained simply works wonders. It almost always calms her and puts that look back on her face that says, “Ah, yes, Papa; I can see that once again you are right: there is nothing to worry about.” more »
I think my milk came in today. Lucy has been nursing pretty well ever since our talk with the lactation consultant at Evanston Hospital just about 24 hours after her birth. more »
Strange baby-commerce item of the day: White Cloud newborn diapers with lyrics from John Lennon’s “Imagine” printed on them: “Imagine all the people / living life in peace.” I guess White Cloud and the marketing department at Wal-Mart (where these are “available exclusively”) must have nixed using the lines, “Imagine no possessions / I wonder if you can.”
In addition to the linguistic, spiritual, and family reasons behind Lucy’s naming, we were aware of a number of cultural references tucked away in her name — most of which we think are really cool. Here are the ones we know about already: more »
Lucy, Jon, and I are all glad to be settled into our cozy home again. Jon just took Lucy for a tour of the house. It was fun to be able to show her all the places she has been for the past nine months, even though she couldn’t see them until now. more »
Hooray! Lucy has arrived at her home here on Saint Louis Avenue, and so far she seems to like it. At least, she seems to like it if we can judge from the fact that she has [1] slept and [2] nursed the whole two hours she’s been here. more »
Oh my, what a delight this little girl is! About 33 hours into the Lucy Era, Ann and I can report “all systems go.” Here are just a very few of the highlights (including a photo): more »
We’re so delighted that our daughter has been born! Her name is Lucy — Lucia Martha Boyd, in full — and both she and Ann are doing great.
No time right now for the full blow-by-blow, but Lucy was born this morning (April 25) at 8:49 am, after just about 12 hours of labor by Ann. more »
So much for getting some rest, as we had hoped: Ann’s contractions have kept steady and increased in intensity all evening — way too much for her to ignore. more »
Ann and I are super excited, though we’re trying to remain calm: All evening she’s been having pretty regular (though brief) contractions — but now they’ve been getting stronger and longer for some time. more »
We had a good appointment today with Jenny the Midwife, and we set a date for induction: this Friday, April 28. We also talked about things we can do before then: more »
One week past Baby’s due date, and no sign of her initiating her journey to the outside world. I did, however, have a series of dreams last night that I was in labor — does that mean anything? I’m feeling quite peaceful about the waiting today. We have an appointment with Jenny the Midwife tomorrow, and we’ll make a plan for the week and discuss the timeline for giving Baby an eviction notice.
Or maybe she’ll decide to come out tonight!
