The Law

In the Boyd car, we have a rule: you cannot sit in “the Law.” Please allow me to explain.

When Lucy was a toddler, she often would ask to sit in the space between her and Rosie’s infant car seats. It was a passionate longing of hers that required much ongoing discussion. We explained to Lucy many times that little girls have to be buckled into car seats. “You may not sit in the space between the car seats. It’s the Law.”

After that, Lucy changed her request: “May I please sit in the Law?”

The name has stuck, and can be heard often, as in:

bq. “Oh no, my pen fell into the Law!” or
“Would you please put my coat in the Law?”

We’re hoping to work it long enough to get it written up as an alternate definition in the “OED(Oxford English Dictionary)”:http://www.oed.com/. :)
