Tidbits from the month: March 2009

We long ago lost the momentum with “The Lucy Files”:http://boydsnest.org/news/category/baby/the-lucy-files/, and along the way we acquired another child. So, here is another bin we’re trying out to catch all of those little things our offspring are up to. Here’s this month’s installment:

* While grocery shopping with Papa, Lucy made an observation about their broccoli purchase. “Bwoccoli,” she said, “just like B’wack Obama.” “Yes,” replied Jon, “except one of them is a vegetable, and one of them is our president.”
* For several months now, Rosie had taken to reading while nursing. This only occurs at bedtime. I read her a book, then hand it to her to “read” on her own while she nurses. It ends up that she and I read our separate books for 15 minutes or so every night before bed.
* For the past few weeks, Lucy has developed a habit of lying prostrate in supplication before Papa, saying “Papa should put me down to bed tonight.” We have no idea where she got this. Each night we ask her if she wants Papa or Mama to put her down to bed. “Papa,” she says. Then she climbs up onto the wide armrest of our futon, lies on her belly, and says, “Papa should put me down to bed.” “Alright, I’ll put you down to bed,” says Jon — as if he needs to be cajoled into this task!
* Rosie has been getting into everything lately: the baking drawer, the garbage can, the Diaper Champ, the toilet. Anything messy or dangerous is quite interesting to her. She is very mobile, and even more curious. This week, I found myself saying, “No, Rosie,” to her so many times that it started to come out, “Ro, Nosie.” Nosie — perhaps an appropriate nickname for our little mischief-hunter!
* Rosie is quickly getting the hang of sign language. We have seen her use several signs appropriately (_more, all done, bathtime_), and we are working on some others (_banana_ and _cereal,_ to start). We think she may have invented her own sign for “dancing”:/news/2009/rosie-week-2-a-very-lively-dancer/. Hey, it works for us! Rosie has also been consistently saying “Mama” and “Papa” when seeing us — how fun to hear her little voice forming words!
* Lucy will sometimes look me full in the face and say, very seriously, “If the time comes, you’ll know what to do.” Wise words from an almost-three-year-old, but note: it’s just a quote from “_The Incredibles_”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005JN4W/octothorppres-20. She also likes it when I say it to her, tucking her hair behind her ear, just like Helen Parr (Mrs. Incredible, a.k.a. Elastigirl) does with her daughter Violet.
* March 27, 2009: Rosie peed in the potty for the first time! For about a week, we’ve been trying to sit her on the potty before bathtime. Usually she sits there for awhile, then we put her in the tub and she promptly pees there. (Sigh.) But Friday, she had a big pee in the potty! Of course, she then proceeded to finish her pee in the tub, but it is a step in the right direction. They do say urine is sterile, but I’m still not crazy about taking a bath in it….

Stay tuned for more fun in April!

  1. Abby does the same thing with sounds. Example: Chalk like chocolate. I forget the other ones, but isn’t it funny to hear them actually figuring out comparison on their own? It has made us be more intentional about teaching the letter sounds.

  2. Oh, what a wonderful, wonderful time you are in! I LOVE those first words, first associations, first books. And Lucy sounds like a riot with her bedtime antics.

  3. Lucy’s line from the Incredibles is hilarious. Ben does the same thing though his have changed. He for awhile was saying “a kid’s gotta do what a kid’s gotta do,” a line from Veggie Tales. Lately he’s taken to humming Beethoven’s 5th symphony, something he got from Little Einsteins!

  4. I remember how excited I was when Mo started picking up the Sign Language. Feels like it was ages ago!

You should check out my blog. We got some huge news today at the Dr’s.
