Elimination emulation

Life has been full here at the Boyd house, but there’s been a surprising development in our bathroom.

Especially in the last month or two, Rosie has been imitating Lucy in every way possible — making silly faces, dancing along with her, wearing her shoes, hollering at the same time. You get the idea. And now, this emulation is spilling over into elimination.

Until a few weeks ago, Rosie hadn’t been very interested in the pre-bath potty practice we were offering. But recently, she became fascinated by the whole process. “Pee! Pee!” we hear from the little sis every time Lucy goes to the bathroom. Rosie will often plop herself on the potty, diaper and pants and all, and resist standing up again for quite awhile. Often it will just take a little encouragement and a naked butt for Rosie to produce a pee in the potty — and cheers from all members of the family!

Yesterday, I decided to experiment with Rosie’s typical elimination pattern and put Rosie on the potty during her usual post-breakfast pooping time. And yes, she pooped! Twice on the potty that day, actually. We were bad impressed.

Rosie seems very pleased with her newfound potty skills, and we are cheering her on. I was intentionally not planning any kind of “potty training weekend”:/news/2008/potty-training-weekend/ until warmer weather rolls around, but if Rosie is self-motivated enough to develop her bathroom independence on her own, I’m all for that. In the meantime, I’m trying to figure out the logistics of two potty-users in a one-bathroom house, and we’re resigned to taking a little pee on the floor with a grain of salt. But it is hard not to start dreaming about what to do with that diaper money we’re going to save!

  1. Hooray for Rosie! Ella started potty training really early, too – it must be a younger sibling thing. I would say with the whole 1 bathroom thing – if you have a little kid potty that might help for the times they both need to go at the same time.

  2. That’s fantastic! Caroline has been a bit of a booger in this area — maybe because she can’t quite “copy” Ben when he goes potty? Definitely advantage to having 2 girls!!

  3. Our Gwenna was the same way. I never even really trained her. She just did what Naomi did….and when she had the words she was trained!
The biggest “issue” is that she knows that when we are in the car and she says she needs to potty she gets out of her seat. Sometimes she is crying wolf and other times she really needs to go. URG!

  4. That’s great news! K is starting to go, with the enticement of Tootsie Rolls, but definitely still a long ways to go.

  5. Isn’t it great! Lydia started at 16 months doing the potty sit. I just blew it off as I am not interested in pushing the issue, but now days we have mostly dry diapers (and cloth, so it isn’t costing a penny) and she will even come to me and say, “mommy poop now, big stinky poop NOW” so off we go. At church we have a little potty next to the big one in the nursery area and they go together without my help… not fun to find the next day a poop in the non-flushing potty that no one told be about. ICK.

All I can say is power to the big sisters!

  6. She is such a cutie!

We’re just beginning to see signs of sibling-ness between Bethany and Abby. Abby’s begun to hold Bethany’s hand as she toddles around the house and Bethany laughs and laughs when Abby makes funny faces or noises.
