Language explosion

It’s only been two weeks since our recent “vocabulary update”:/news/2007/vocabulary-update-september-7-2007/, but she’s talking up a storm! They say eighteen-month-olds can learn up to seven words a day, so we’re seeing some of this language explosion. Here are the latest and greatest _bons mots._

  1. Isn’t it fun! Soon you won’t even be able to post all the words because there will be so many. I counted when Benjamin was 18 months old and he had about 50 words, by the time he turned two I didn’t even bother trying to count.

We’re starting to understand some of Ella’s language now. She says “kitty” for sure, even though it doesn’t sound exactly like kitty you can tell that’s what she’s saying because she says it every time she sees a cat and points at the cat. Kind of funny as that was also Benjamin’s first word. I guess our cats are just really exciting.

  2. I remember taking Madelyn to the doctor for 18 mo and the doctor asked how many words she was saying (normal is 25 – 50ish) and I said well I would guess about 100. Brian didn’t believe me, so that night we were in bed with pen and paper writing the words down we stopped at 89, but then the next morning we had found a few more we had missed. It blew us away.
We hadn’t even thought to count the signing (are you using signing time stuff?)

Keep your ears open you won’t believe the words out of her mouth!

  3. I think it gets really fun (and a little scary) when you hear things you say coming out of their mouths. For example – Benjamin is paranoid of anything hot (having burned his hand last spring) so if something is at all warm he’ll say “hot, hot” and I’ll say, “no, it’s just a little warm” and now I’ll overhear him talking to himself when food is warm “no, no, not hot, just a little warm”.

  4. Has Lucy given any of her signs more than one use? Mo now uses “more” for almost everything. It’s his all-purpose I want sign. Rather than sign toothbrush this morning, he pointed at the medicine cabinet and signed more. I made him sign toothbrush before handing it over though.

I’m amazed at all those words! You have quite the talker!

  5. Yup, Lucy uses the “more” sign for lots of things. Also, I’ve noticed that she either uses the same word for different things, or I can’t understand her sometimes. For example, lately I think her word for “cookie” means both “cookie” and “okay,” depending on the context. And sometimes it might mean “car key.” We’ve just got to keep on watching her to know what she means!
