Feeding alternatives

Posted in Babies at 7:29 pm by Ann

Hitting the bottle

We are experimenting with some alternative methods of feeding around here. No, Jon and I are still eating with knife, fork, and the occasional chopstick. Lucy, on the other hand, is entering the wonderful world of silicone nipples. more »

Posted in Babies at 10:35 pm by Ann

Curses! Paparazzi!

Lucy turned five weeks old today. Amazing! These weeks have marched on steadily, and suddenly here we are with a five-week-old baby and more and more clues all the time about how to care for her. Join us on our Lucy watch for a day in the life, week five: more »

Bouncing baby Boyd

Posted in Babies at 5:03 pm by Ann

Bouncers

We cannot let another day pass without writing of Lucy’s intense passion for bouncing. She insists on being bounced early and often. We have been contemplating changing her name to Tigger, but completing the legal paperwork involved would take away time from bouncing Lucy, and she just won’t have that. more »

One month

Posted in Babies at 10:48 pm by Ann

Tub time

Yesterday was Lucy’s one month birthday. Hooray! Jon and I notice that she is looking more and more like a baby these days. Namely, she is a cutie. Let us tell you about several exciting events this week, some upcoming and some already passed, that we think are an appropriate way to celebrate Lucy turning one month old: more »

Stumped

Posted in Babies at 12:33 pm by Ann

In honor of Lucy’s one-month birthday today, we’d like to make a confession: We still have her dried-up umbilical-cord stump sitting in a little dish on the changing table. more »

What are you smiling about?

Posted in Babies at 6:07 pm by Jon

Cheese!

We acknowledge that the human smile is a psycho-physiological phenomenon, and that until newborns attain [1] control of their facial muscles and [2] perception of their surroundings it’s literally nonsense to say they’re truly smiling. Every once in a while, though, Lucy’s face cracks a grin on its own. more »

Bunny-cide

Posted in Babies at 7:50 pm by Ann

Die, bunnies, die!

I love our Chicago bungalow, and I love its hardwood floors. But I hate the dust bunnies. After four weeks of undisturbed reproduction opportunities, they have moved in and started to take out home equity loans. But today we put a stop to it. more »

Three minutes in the life of Lucy

Posted in Babies at 10:10 am by Jon

One frame from the Lucy filmstrip

Ann went nuts with the camera yesterday and shot a string of 20 photos of Lucy in her arms over the course of three minutes. Most of them are a bit out of focus, but at a small scale you can’t really notice — and the whole series captures a feel for what it’s like to hold and look into the face of this very active little baby. So I put them together into a “filmstrip.” more »

Thinking out loud

I am constantly inspired by you readers who have been so helpful in responding to posts here at BNN. In particular, a number of comments on yesterday’s rant about Tracy Hogg got me thinking. more »

Why I am mad at Tracy Hogg

Posted in Babies at 9:43 pm by Ann

When I was pregnant, I really enjoyed reading The Secrets of the Baby Whisperer by Tracy Hogg. I thought she sounded like a very reasonable person. Now, I am mad at her (even though she’s dead). more »

Sleep poker

Posted in Babies at 9:29 pm by Ann

Sound asleep

I’m not a gambling woman, but putting Lucy down to sleep sure does feel chancey to me most of the time. Each time I quickly dash out of the room, heart racing, listening anxiously for any whimpering, I think about how much this process feels like luck rather than skill. Here’s how: more »

Signs of health

Posted in Babies at 6:49 pm by Ann

Multitasking Ann

I can tell that I’m starting to feel a bit more comfortable in my own skin these days. The first few weeks of Lucy’s out-of-womb experience have been quite an exciting ride, and I’ve felt a lot like I’m holding on for dear life. But here are a few signs that I’m starting to feel just like regular old Ann again: more »

Arch angel

Strrrretch!

Earlier this week, Ann wrote about Lucy’s adorable "little stretch routine" when waking up from a swaddled sleep, and that made me realize we didn’t have any photos of that. more »
