Life is different now that Lucy is around. (Duh.) For instance, activities have new levels of accessibility when you have a baby attached to your abdomen. Let me share a few examples: Continue reading “Babywearing limits”
Mommy brain
I have always considered myself to be a good conversation partner. I try to listen well, ask good questions, and look a person in the eye when I’m talking with them. But lately, it seems as if that part of my brain is malfunctioning. Continue reading “Mommy brain”
Mama’s first cold
Needless to say I’ve had many colds in my life, but never one as a mother. With the onset of a sore throat yesterday, I think that’s no longer true. If I can get past feeling sorry for myself, maybe I’ll be able to modify my self-pampering sick routine. Continue reading “Mama’s first cold”
First day of school
No, we aren’t sending Lucy off to preschool yet (even though she is clearly brilliant). Tomorrow is the first day of Dr. Boyd’s teaching career at North Park University. Continue reading “First day of school”
Fussy eater
We have good news and bad news. The good news is that Lucy is sleeping well at night, taking terrific naps, and often going four hours between feedings. The bad news is that my body is having a hard time keeping up with Lucy’s demand of big, infrequent feedings. Continue reading “Fussy eater”
Have baby, will travel
We just returned from Lucy’s first overnight and first out-of-state trip. We fully intended to write about this momentous occasion before we left, but it turned out that planning and packing for the trip took almost as much time as the actual journey. Continue reading “Have baby, will travel”

Power to the mamas
There was an article this week in the _Chicago Tribune_ about breastfeeding rights. I have heard about people who fight for their right to nurse in public. I have (thankfully) never encountered such a confrontation myself — but I’m outraged on behalf of those who have been hassled! Continue reading “Power to the mamas”
Homemade “Sloppy Boyds”
The other day I had a hankering for sloppy joes. Then I realized I had no can of Sloppy Joe sauce in the house! What’s a girl to do? Luckily, the Internet (plus a little ingenuity) came to our rescue. Continue reading “Homemade “Sloppy Boyds””
White space
The other night, while wrestling with sleep, it dawned on me that I don’t have very much “white space” in my days anymore. On any printed page, things always look better if you have some blank space giving your eye room to focus. Without white space, you’re looking at newspaper coupons, the classifieds, or the phone book. So, my life is sort of like that now, except not as ugly. Continue reading “White space”
