Zoo trip

The other day, Jon realized he had one vacation day he had to use (or lose) before the end of September. I said, “Let’s use it!” And he said, “Let’s go to the zoo!”

I love visiting the zoo. I’ve always found it very peaceful and restorative. There is something wonderful about being in the presence of animals who are just happy to be themselves. They aren’t striving to be a better zebra — they seem content just to be zebra-ish. I’ve been longing to go to the zoo with Lucy since she was just a tiny button, and this was a great day. We had perfect weather, attentive polar bears, chocolate malts from Potbelly, baby penguins, and a surprise nap by Lucy in her stroller (something she rarely does, so a delight to us all).

Life in our little Boyds’ Nest has been pretty packed these past months, especially with Jon taking on his adjunct “teaching at North Park University”:/news/2006/first-day-of-school/ in the fall. So, a one-day mini-vacation was really beneficial to us as a family. We really enjoyed being together and not having to worry about laundry or dishes or working for a few hours. It was a great reminder to be present with each other, just being Boyds together. I hope Lucy will grow to love giraffe-watching as much as we do!

  1. Ann took this one, and isn’t it a keeper? One especially nice detail is the second polar bear which you can see in its entirety in the center background.

  2. heeheehee. i love how lucy’s hair is standing up. and it looks like the polar bear is bowing to lucy. how appropriate since she is a princess! great photo, and glad you guys had a good time.
