First day of school

No, we aren’t sending Lucy off to preschool yet (even though she is clearly brilliant). Tomorrow is the first day of Dr. Boyd’s teaching career at North Park University.

Jon was offered an opportunity to serve as an adjunct professor this semester at “North Park University”:http://www.northpark.edu/, teaching an upper-division course on U.S. Intellectual History. When this idea first came up in the spring, we had to think hard about it. There were a lot of pluses: we live three blocks from campus, the class size is small, and it is a great way for Jon to be active in the academic world again. But would it be feasible for Jon to work his regular InterVarsity job *and* teach this class at North Park *and* be Papa to a new baby? We decided we could do it.

And guess how I feel? Super-proud. Jon has been working really hard to get things ready for this class and is very excited about it. Working with a “campus ministry”:http://www.intervarsity.org/ reminds me daily of the need for professors who not only can train students to be excellent scholars, but who know the spiritual significance of teaching people to think critically. We think Papa’s got what it takes. Lucy and I are going to blow raspberries at him to express our support as he walks out the door!

  1. I just have to testify that Ann has been *so amazing* in helping me to prepare for this course. She’s not only been supportive of the long hours of prep necessary (which must be drawn from my already-mythical “free time”), but she’s had lots of good ideas about specific things I should do in the classroom. I’m so grateful.

  2. Congratulations Jon! What a wonderful way to make a further impact on the campus. It was great seeing you guys yesterday and finally meeting litttle Lucy! She’s absolutely adorable! :)

  3. yes, congrats Jon…

and I wish I could be there in the class because I have NOT always enjoyed history. Much to learn…. ;o) glad you’re there to give students not just dry facts but also understanding and passion for truth.

  4. A big congrats Jon! It sounds like a great class to study the religious tenets held by the “founding fathers” and others.

Ann, I know how proud you and Lucy must be. I know I was on John’s first day!
