More random tidbits from The Lucy Files, including notes about cilantro, hand-smacking, and a triumphant (and medically verified) burp.
* Lucy’s Italian heritage comes out when eating: she enjoys a long, unhurried mealtime.
* Ann says Lucy’s chubby little thighs remind her of turkey drumsticks.
* In the seventh and eighth weeks, her movements got noticeably smoother, less jerky.
* Lucy’s eyes are slightly asymmetrical (the left is usually open wider than her right), just like Mama’s. (See photo for proof of both.)
* Speaking of Mama, we never noticed that Ann has a delicate, pale vertical line under her nose, until we noticed the same thing on Lucy during her first few days.
* On June 22, we awoke to loud smacking noises: Lucy had freed one arm from her swaddling and was sucking vigorously on her hand.
* On June 28, at the doctor’s office, I was trying burp her without success, and said, “You’re not going to burp, are you” — whereupon she immediately let out the loudest, clearest, longest burp to rival Papa at his best, making us all laugh.
* Burping Lucy is more hazardous these days, as Lucy is gaining more head control. Mama is learning to be aware of Lucy’s tendency to turn her head quickly and bonk her in the nose.
* Last week she got her Social Security number, so now she officially exists in the eyes of the state.
* Lucy’s baby wipes of choice are Kirkland brand, found at Costco. While Mama was standing in line to buy these the other day, she noticed that the baby on the box totally looks like he is wearing a toupée.
* Lucy has gotten quite skilled lately at clasping her hands together just under her chin. Then she chomps on them.
* Lucy has a tiny bit of cradle cap on her scalp and on her left eyebrow. We sometimes call her “Old Dandruff Eyebrow.” (Not really.)
* Two sure signs that Lucy is awake: when her eyes are open and her tongue is sticking out.
* Lucy has been crying real tears for several weeks now, though only when she’s seriously worked up. (Apparently, most babies don’t produce real tears until three months.) Is she a particularly gifted cryer?
* Lucy loves to observe our faces, especially Papa’s. Sometimes we’ll put her in the swing while we eat a meal, and then Jon is startled when he looks over and sees Lucy staring at him. It can be a bit disconcerting, but charming.
* Mama is convinced that Lucy’s breath smells just like cilantro after nursing, but Papa is dubious. Papa likes cilantro.
* Lucy continues to be good at peeing almost on cue during a diaper change. The secret phrase seems to be (in the voice of “Treebeard”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167261/), “Rrrelease the Rrrivah!”
If the cradle cap really bothers you, rub a little oil on the top of her head. Naomi had cradle cap and everyone kept picking on it….so even though they grow out of it the oil trick kept the boys from picking on their sister by clearing up the cradle cap.
in addition to Nicole’s advice use a brush when you are washing her hair. Put soap on the head and bush it clean.
