Tidbits for July 2009

And now for the second installment of our belated Boydling tidbits — for July 2009!

* Lucy says, “Papa, is your name Layder Doo?” After a few confused minutes, we realize she is trying to say, “Later, dude.” Probably a quote from Finding Nemo.
* After a couple of months of wondering why Lucy was saying, “How about a perfect toe chef?”:/news/2009/tidbits-from-the-month-may-2009/, I finally figured it out. “How about a super-terrific toast chef?” is the actual quote from the theme to Disney’s _Higglytown Heros_, feature in a video by “They Might Be Giants”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000BEZPSC/octothorppres-20.
* Rosie is learning how to get dressed. She can stand up and step into her pants while I hold them out, and also lean on me to put on shoes while standing. She sometimes helps me with the laundry, too, and usually ends up with several pairs of underwear on her head.
* Lucy, on her own initiative, decided to give up nighttime diapers, and has been keeping her bed dry all night long! We are so impressed with her. And we are delighted to be saving the $.30 each night from those Huggies Overnite diapers! (They are totally worth it, though, when you need ’em.)
* Lucy has become amazingly good at pointing out any Toyota Prius she sees on the road. “Papa, you know how to identify the Prius, and I know how to identify the Prius, too!”
* Lucy seems to have ended her “nap sabbatical”:http://boydsnest.org/news/2009/nap-sabbatica/ and changed her job description to “freelance napper.” I’m grateful that she at least naps occasionally, but it is rarely more than twice a week. We are still working on quiet time. I’ve found that it helps if I take quiet time as an opportunity to bathe — she is convinced that I cannot hear her calling for me while I’m in the shower. And she is right!
* Rosie’s vocabulary is growing. Often we are the only ones who can really understand her, but that is the privilege of being parents. She will often communicate with inflection, context, and the correct number of syllables, but skip the whole distinctive consonant business. With this system, “hot dog” (da-da) and “glasses” (da-da) sound pretty much the same, but at least we know what she is talking about! Here is our attempt at listing her vocabulary, although I’m sure we’ve forgotten some:
** tickle (her very first word, and one of her clearest)
** thank you
** hot dog
** bath time
** please
** belly button
** Mama
** Papa
** (air)plane
** bird/any small animal
** hi
** cracker
** bye
** nose
** leg
** thirsty/drink
** glasses
** hot
** bowl
** ball
** flower
** raisin
* Rosie is also improving in the animal sounds department, mastering buzz, moo, and quack. We’re working on oink (which is really a snort at the Boyd household) and woof.
