Eleven and three

Big day yesterday: We discovered that Lucy now has eleven (count ’em) teeth, and we witnessed her taking three consecutive steps without hand-holds over open ground.

The eleven teeth include the two latest (which we’d been unaware of): an upper and a lower molar on her right side. No wonder she’s been processing so efficiently those hunks of pretzel rod I’ve been slipping her.

The three steps were definitely the excitement of the day. She’s been working on single steps without hand-holds for over a week, delighting us with a tottering lunge-and-step, but three steps in a row! That’s real walking, as far as we’re concerned. Now of course, she’s not doing it consistently — she still buckles her knees into her lightning crawl at the slightest provocation — but this gave us a preview of what’s coming before long, I’m sure.

Go, Lucy!

  1. Oh, let the fun begin. Soon she will learn to climb up on things (like tables) and then things get really interesting!

  2. Wow! Lucy is a bonafide chomper these days! Abby is still only working on her 5th, you read it right, 5th tooth. I keep sticking my finger in her mouth and feeling around thinking maybe I’ve missed some and..nothing! :)

  3. I agree with Katrina – although the climbing that followed walking was a bit distressing at first. Benjamin was really short, so he couldn’t climb up on the furniture until he was about 16 months old, right around when Ella was born. So there I was, nursing a newborn and watching as my toddler climbed up onto the kitchen table and did his version of dancing (basically running place).

I must say walking is great in terms of germs – you can put them down in public places and let them go and then just wash their hands. So much nicer than crawling where you just don’t want to put them down anywhere because floors can be so gross!

  4. I also agree with Katrina — I loved the walking too. It was so nice not to have to carry them around constantly and we could go to the park and do more than just push him on the swing.
