After weeks of struggling with bathing a wiggling, shrieking baby (or avoiding the whole bath scene altogether), we’re seeing a change: Lucy seems to be joining the company of water-lovers. Last night was the first time I’ve not had to evaluate her enjoyment of the bath by counting the minutes she didn’t scream.
We’re not sure what caused her change of heart. It might be that she got several good naps yesterday, so she was nice and rested for her bath. Or it could be that I started her sitting high up on the bath ramp so she was able to dabble her toes in the water first before taking the plunge. Or maybe it is just that she is getting older, wiser, and more acclimated to the world.

Whatever it was, Lucy seemed to have a great time. She splashed her hands in the water, held herself up on her tummy while I shampooed her hair, and even consented to getting her neck-cheese rinsed away. She seemed pretty fascinated by a yellow rubby ducky we have that indicates the water is a safe temperature. She did start to cry a bit right at the end, but I think she was just saying, “I’m done with the bath now, Mama!” And then, of course, we had the best part of bathtime to calm her down: blow-drying her hair à la Salon Lucia.
As a certified water-lover myself, I’m glad to see Lucy splashing around with interest. Between bath toys, pool parties, and sand castles, there is a lot yet to explore. We have great hope for a wet and fun future with our daughter!
My dear Lucia,
If you think a bath is hot stuff, just wait until you discover a shower! You will really have fun then. No one can get close enough to bother you without getting all wet themselves. You might even think of this as your personal independance day. I love you.
