In addition to the “linguistic, spiritual, and family reasons”:http://lucyboyd.com/about/ behind Lucy’s naming, we were aware of a number of cultural references tucked away in her name — most of which we think are really cool. Here are the ones we know about already:
* *Lucy* Pevensie, the youngest of the children in C. S. Lewis’s _Chronicles of Narnia_
* *Lucy* Van Pelt of Charles Schulz’s _Peanuts_
* Lucille Ball’s “I Love *Lucy*” (a declaration that certainly applies around here!)
* *Lucy* the younger sister in Lynda Barry’s “_The Good Times Are Killing Me_”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/157061105X/octothorppres-20 (a book we read the day after we first thought of calling our baby this, in November 2005)
* “*Lucy* Liu”:http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0005154/, an actress known for her role as Alex in “_Charlie’s Angels_”:http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0160127/
* “Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes” — from the Beatles’ “*Lucy* in the Sky with Diamonds” (thanks, Uncle Jim!)
* *Lucy* the 3.18-million-year-old Hominid fossil (herself “named after the Beatles’ Lucy”:http://www.asu.edu/clas/iho/lucy.html#name), once the oldest known
* even “Loose *Lucy*” by the Grateful Dead (though we hope our Lucy won’t treat her man so bad)
But we’re sure there are many others. What other uses of the name _Lucy_ or _Lucia_ in literature, film, song, or story have we missed? Please add a comment to let us know!

Mr. Wanak — Hilarious! I’m sure I’ll spend the rest of the day thinking of names like this now….
Well then… my work here is complete!
Have you heard of the Princess Lucia of the Foster Avenue (by North Park)? They have a Swedish pride parade every year (or used to because my grandmother told me about it) where they choose a girl to be the parad princess Lucia.
I can’t wait to meet her!!
Kristine — That’s cool! We haven’t heard about this, but we live just a few houses north of Foster, so we should look into it. Maybe we’ll have to launch Lucy’s candidacy? :)
Sorry for the late addition!
Lucy Maud Montgomery–creator of my favorite slate-breaking rehead, Anne of Green Gables!
Edit to previous post: redhead!
Jon, why can’t I edit my own posts?!
I was just remembering — the main character in _A Room with a View_ by E.M. Forster is named Lucy Honeychurch, and I think her proper name might be Lucia. Even if it isn’t, the book is set in Italy, so that’s worth something. I love the “movie”:http://imdb.com/title/tt0091867/ with Helena Bonham Carter.
