For the past couple days, I’ve had Bob Marley’s song “Small Axe” running through my head. The beat has a “one-two-three” riff that has been lodged deep in my brain, to a degree that’s a bit unusual. Here’s the first verse:
bq. Why boasteth thyself,
O evil man,
Playing smart
And not being clever?
I said, you’re working iniquity
To achieve vanity
But the goodness of Jah, Jah
Endureth forever
So if you are the big tree,
We are the small axe
Ready to cut you down
To cut you down
Will our new little Lucy be a “small axe” of God’s goodness and justice somehow? Will she be like one of history’s many women of prayer and persistence who hunger and thirst after righteousness and bring down “big trees” of iniquity? I guess we’ll have to wait and see (and meanwhile, start her training regimen).
