The other day I had a hankering for sloppy joes. Then I realized I had no can of Sloppy Joe sauce in the house! What’s a girl to do? Luckily, the Internet (plus a little ingenuity) came to our rescue. I discovered a pretty good recipe at allrecipes.com, modified it a bit to suit my tastes (i.e., no onions), and founded our very own Boyd family Sloppy Joe recipe. And you don’t even have to pay 69¢ for it.
*Sloppy Boyds*
1 T olive oil
3-5 garlic cloves, minced
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
1 pound lean ground turkey (93% lean)
4 hamburger buns
sauce:
1 T brown sugar
1 T cider vinegar
1/2 c ketchup
1/2 c barbecue sauce
2 T prepared mustard
1/4 t cinnamon
1/2 t salt
hot sauce, to taste (optional)
In a large skillet over medium heat, heat olive oil. Add garlic and pepper and saute 1-2 minutes. Add turkey; cook until browned, then drain off excess grease.
Combine sauce ingredients in a separate bowl. (This can be done ahead of time if you are trying to foil a fussy-baby timebomb.) Add sauce to meat; simmer for 10-30 minutes on low heat. Spoon up onto hamburger buns. Serve with knife, fork, and several napkins.
Ann:
As someone who often looks for substitutions for onions, let me offer my substitution in your Sloppy Boyd recipe. I dont’ really like green peppers and have often substituted carrots in sloppy joes. It makes the recipe a little healthier and makes the end result a little sweeter (good if you are trying to get kids to like it).
