But I thought it would be worthwhile to look for places where they could just be kids, where they wouldn&#8217;t have to worry so much about being polite and quiet. So we kept our eyes open for opportunities to play \u2014 and we were rewarded with some pretty amazing playgrounds.<\/p>\n<p>In Greenwich, the girls stretched their legs in a gorgeous setting while I sat on a park bench and read. Being in the middle of reading Enid Blyton&#8217;s <em>The Magic Faraway Tree<\/em> series, Lucy and Rosie got into some creative play, assuming the various personas of Silky, Moonface, and The Saucepan Man from that delightful and fantastical set of books.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/2016\/touring-the-playgrounds-frolicking-our-way-through-englands-jungle-gyms\/greenwich\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9344\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/greenwich.jpg\" alt=\"A playground in Greenwich.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/greenwich.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/greenwich-128x96.jpg 128w, https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/greenwich-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>Climbing in Greenwich.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Jon took this playground opportunity to walk a few blocks back to a statue of Admiral Nelson in order to document Lucy&#8217;s enduring observation that he lost his hand in battle &#8220;just like Luke Skywalker.&#8221;<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/2016\/touring-the-playgrounds-frolicking-our-way-through-englands-jungle-gyms\/admiralnelson\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9345\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/admiralnelson.jpg\" alt=\"Admiral Nelson.\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-9345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/admiralnelson.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/admiralnelson-128x96.jpg 128w, https:\/\/boydsnest.org\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/09\/admiralnelson-768x576.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<em>The force was with him.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>After visiting the British Museum on another day, we stumbled upon a playground (complete with a zipline) in a busy city area. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.coramsfields.org\">Coram&#8217;s Fields<\/a> housed London&#8217;s first orphan hospital in the 1700s and, when the hospital relocated in the 1920s, became the site of London&#8217;s first public children&#8217;s playground.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/185415212?title=0&#038;byline=0&#038;portrait=0\" width=\"1000\" height=\"563\" frameborder=\"0\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The girls were enticed by the zipline, but it took them a few minutes to master their shyness and jump in with the few English kids already at play. We finally left after I started sneezing uncontrollably \u2014\u00a0from the seedpods of the unknown English tree dropping all around us? \u2014 and after Rosie had acquired a handful of splinters and a twisted ankle. (Never mind the construction zone behind us!)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Rosie and Lucy fondly remember a tiny little playground just blocks away from the flat where we stayed, found on our second day in London. We spent twenty minutes or so here, exploring while Jon finished the glorious and meaty English breakfast our girls refused to eat.
