Lucy is not quite seven months old — but as of today, we’ve been calling her Lucy for a full year. <\/p>\n

I keep a multi-year journal that shows spaces for twelve years’ worth of November 19s on a single spread — so that’s how I notice that last year on this date was when the name “Lucy” (even specifically “Lucia”!) first occurred to me as a name for our daughter _in utero._ (We had just learned the day before, by means of ultrasound, that the little sprout was a girl.)<\/p>\n

We had been generating a “short list” — which had gotten quite long — of names for baby boys and girls, but none of them had quite clicked with us yet. We were waiting for that “ah ha!” moment when we’d hit on the name that was just right. It was pretty clear right away that “Lucy” was that name.<\/p>\n

And then it was so hard to keep it a secret, since we were resolved not to leak it to anyone. Ann prepared a set of cut-out letters, along with paper flowers, to put up on her nursery wall (see photo), and we had to keep them hidden till after Lucy’s emergence. But mostly what was hard was keeping our mouths shut, we were so excited.<\/p>\n

We can’t believe it’s been a year since “Lucy” dawned on us. Don’t you think it suits her grand?<\/p>\n
