I don’t know when it was — the last time I myself slept in a bunk bed. (Perhaps in that German youth hostel in the Old City of Jerusalem, though that’s another story.) But why are bunk beds so awesome? <\/p>\n

I don’t know that I have a great answer to that question, but I can illustrate how they capture the imagination of a little kid — or rather, _Lucy_ can. Here’s a drawing she made last summer, shortly after I built bunk beds for the girls.<\/p>\n

bq. This drawing is from Lucy. It depicts the new bunk beds the girls sleep in. You can see Rosie (holding [her doll] Gwen) sleeping on the bottom bunk, with under-bed storage boxes beneath her. There is a mattress on the floor to catch Rosie in case she rolls off (this part is fictional :) ). Lucy is sleeping on the top bunk beneath a giant leaf canopy. Glow-in-the-dark stars adorn the ceiling. On the dresser to the right, [the little character] Glassie sits, holding Lucy’s glasses safely through the night.<\/p>\n
