Have a cherry

Both of our girls have loved music from their earliest days. But lately Rosie has taken a particular fancy to bursting out in song — and we just love it.

We remember Rosie’s “coloratura”:/news/2008/coloratura-do-you-think/ baby antics with pleasure, so it’s delightful to hear her picking up tunes and singing them to everyone around. Over the summer, you could often find Rosie singing “Lullaby” to her favorite doll, “Gwen”:/news/2010/sweet-pea/. Recently, she absolutely fell in love with the “Mary Poppins”:/news/2008/practically-perfect-in-every-way/ “soundtrack”:http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000654YWO/octothorppres-20, even though she has only seen the movie a couple of times.

Her very favorite song is “The Perfect Nanny,” which Jane and Michael Banks sing as they describe their advertisement for a new nanny. Rosie calls this song “Have a cherry,” a variation on the second line: “If you want this choice position, / Have a cheery disposition.”

It is totally adorable to hear both Lucy and Rosie singing this song together. There are these rare moments when we’re driving somewhere in the car, and the girls start singing in unison, sometimes holding hands. (And I simultaneously wonder, “How did I get this amazing life?” and “Where is my camera?”) Today, I got a video of Rosie’s singing here for you to enjoy. By the way, yes, that’s four pieces of scotch tape on her nose.

(Updated December 3, 2010.) Here are the lyrics, for those of you who aren’t as intimately familiar with “Mary Poppins“:http://boydsnest.org/news/2008/practically-perfect-in-every-way/ as we are.

bq. If you want this choice position
Have a cheery disposition,
Rosy cheeks, no warts,
Play games — all sorts.
You must be kind, you must be witty,
Very sweet, and fairly pretty.
Take us on outings, give us treats,
Sing songs, bring sweets…. [my nose feeling better!]

They may not have inherited my curly hair, but here’s at least one way I can tell they are my daughters: they love to sing!

  1. What a beautiful song. We feel so lucky to hear this and to see that beautiful face (tape included) so happy in her young life. We are fortunate, indeed, and we send you all our love…
