There’s a verse in the Book of Isaiah that has lately struck me — a verse that sums up the indirect (though certainly powerful) way God often works in the world. In context, the passage is about forging swords for wreaking havoc, but I think it applies to midwives, maternity nurses, and you. more »

We were all one-year-olds, once — even Papa (that old dog). Here’s photographic evidence, as we anticipate Lucy herself turning one next Wednesday. more »

Jon and I just finished watching the final episode of The West Wing. We’ve been watching this TV show (on DVD) about life at the White House for over a year (cramming seven years’ broadcasts into one), so we’ve been thinking about it a lot. This prompted Jon to ask me the other day, “What would you do if you were First Lady?” Interesting question. more »

Just a little heads-up here: Our hosting provider will be taking their whole operation down for about three hours starting at 1:15 AM CT on Sunday, February 25, for emergency electrical repairs. If you try to visit BNN then, you’ll get a whole lot of nothing — but please come back Sunday morning and we trust everything will be back to normal.

We have a special candle that we light when we want to say something to God, but we don’t know what words to use to pray hard enough. Last updated Feb 16, 8:15 PM more »

On this brisk Chicago morning (5°F when we left the house!), we had an outing to our favorite local breakfast spot, The Tre Kronor. Everything was wonderful — except for the cranky guy at the next table. more »

Since Sarah Jane tagged us, we’ll offer our Thanksgiving message — from A to Z. (And we shamelessly steal the acrostic idea from our friend Kelly, but she stole it from the Psalms first, so it’s OK.) more »

A few months ago, while desperately trying to find a way to think about non-baby-related things, I stumbled upon The Week. It is the perfect magazine to help a new mother keep up with the news, with clearly written, comprehensive, brief articles; almost no ads; and only 40 pages per issue. more »

No, we aren’t sending Lucy off to preschool yet (even though she is clearly brilliant). Tomorrow is the first day of Dr. Boyd’s teaching career at North Park University. more »

July 10 was my Grandma Martha Borzykowski’s birthday. She would have been 95 today, but she passed away last August. Our little Lucy got her middle name from her, and we hope she has inherited lots more, too. more »

Today, Jon suggested that I write about the other website I’ve been posting on for years: BabyFit.com. It is surprising that I haven’t thought about writing about this website, but it has become such a regular part of my life that it didn’t occur to me! more »

We had a friend over the other day who’s not quite five years old. He was interested in a couple of simple clay objects out on our livingroom table (a large ring and a chunky heart). He asked who made them, and when we said that we had, he asked in amazement — “You still have clay?”
We hope he’ll always remember that, yes, even grown-ups can goof around with the arts. :)

We imagine that some of you might want to help out with meals now that Lucy has been born. (It sure is a perfect excuse to come over and meet her!) If so, please get in touch with our Field Marshall of Meals, Dora. You can reach her at dorame {at} uwalumni {dot} com. She’ll be delighted to find you a spot in the schedule. Thanks!
