From airplane to yummy
Rosie experienced a language explosion during December and January, and wow! It is really fun to talk to her now!
Rosie has been delighting us daily with new thoughts for months now. Here are a few amusing examples:
- One morning, she turned to Jon as he sat down with his morning coffee and said, “Boom. Papa. Uh-uh. Cup.” This was hardly a string of unrelated words! Jon asked, “Rosie, are you saying I should be careful not to spill my cup?” Vigorous nodding.
- Rosie has mastered the big/small concept, as we can tell from her constant comparisons: “Tiny toe. Biggie toe!”
- During a Christmas cookie baking frenzy back in late December, Rosie immediately learned the word dough, as in “More dough!” The desire to communicate about food is motivating, to be sure. Here’s the on-the-spot footage:
- We’ve been enjoying Rosie’s creative mind. For a few months, she has been walking around pretending to be a (very cute) monster, declaring her threatening presence along the way: “Monster!”
- Rosie loves to sing the Brahms “Lullaby” to her dolls, tucking them in with a blanket, and putting them down for a nap.
- You’ll often find Rosie walking into the closet to “buy apples,” and then bring you a taste of one. Yum! (Where she got the idea that the closet was an apple orchard, we have no idea.)
- Lately, Rosie has joined Lucy in a game where they see an imaginary alligator, get bitten on the foot, and then promptly scare the alligator away with a vigorous yell. “BAH! Go away, alligator!”
Rosie is adding so many new words every day, we just can’t keep track of them anymore (and in fact, we gave up trying a month ago today). But her very first word, after Mama and later Papa, was tickle — very appropriate for this joyful little person. And then we made an effort to note the first 200 or so words we heard from her. We don’t expect you to read them all, but for posterity, here we offer Rosie’s First Two Hundred (and then some), as the list stood on January 9, 2010. Keep on talking, sweetie!
