Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes

Posted in Babies at 3:53 pm by Jon

In addition to the linguistic, spiritual, and family reasons behind Lucy’s naming, we were aware of a number of cultural references tucked away in her name — most of which we think are really cool. Here are the ones we know about already:

  • Lucy Pevensie, the youngest of the children in C. S. Lewis’s Chronicles of Narnia
  • Lucy Van Pelt of Charles Schulz’s Peanuts
  • Lucille Ball’s “I Love Lucy“ (a declaration that certainly applies around here!)
  • Lucy the younger sister in Lynda Barry’s The Good Times Are Killing Me (a book we read the day after we first thought of calling our baby this, in November 2005)
  • Lucy Liu, an actress known for her role as Alex in Charlie’s Angels
  • “Look for the girl with the sun in her eyes” — from the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” (thanks, Uncle Jim!)
  • Lucy the 3.18-million-year-old Hominid fossil (herself named after the Beatles’ Lucy), once the oldest known
  • even “Loose Lucy“ by the Grateful Dead (though we hope our Lucy won’t treat her man so bad)

But we’re sure there are many others. What other uses of the name Lucy or Lucia in literature, film, song, or story have we missed? Please add a comment to let us know!

Welcome to the world, Lucy. You have a beautiful and well-chosen name. Here are a few runner-up names that you could have received:

X, pronounced “ten”, as in “OS X”
    Boyd, as in “Boyd Boyd”
Smiles, the longest name in the English language
    Sun Unit

Nativity Serr, an “annagram” of InterVarsity
    iLucy
    #, pronounced “Octothorp”
Pikachu, a lovely Japanese name meaning “Addicted to Nintendo”

    And finally…

Sue (if you turned out to be a boy)

Mr. Wanak — Hilarious! I’m sure I’ll spend the rest of the day thinking of names like this now….

Have you heard of the Princess Lucia of the Foster Avenue (by North Park)? They have a Swedish pride parade every year (or used to because my grandmother told me about it) where they choose a girl to be the parad princess Lucia.

I can’t wait to meet her!!

Kristine — That’s cool! We haven’t heard about this, but we live just a few houses north of Foster, so we should look into it. Maybe we’ll have to launch Lucy’s candidacy? :)

    Sorry for the late addition!

Lucy Maud Montgomery—creator of my favorite slate-breaking rehead, Anne of Green Gables!

I was just remembering — the main character in A Room with a View by E.M. Forster is named Lucy Honeychurch, and I think her proper name might be Lucia. Even if it isn’t, the book is set in Italy, so that’s worth something. I love the movie with Helena Bonham Carter.
